Southern Vermont Orchards was originally established by Edward Hamlin Everett. In the spring of 1912 he began setting out apple trees. By 1920 he had extended his holdings from the original farm south over Carpenter Hill to Pownal, a distance exceeding ten miles. On this land, he planted cherries, quince, pears and plums as well as 65 varieties of apples. Under his guidance Everett Orchards became the largest privately owned orchard in the world, renowned for its modern agricultural practice and high quality fruit.

Following Everett's death in 1929 his property was gradually divided and sold. Today, Southern Vermont Orchards, owned and operated by Harold Albiner, operates all the original orchard that remains in production. Our 300 acres of orchard continue to benefit from Everett's wise selection of location which enables us to raise an apple of unique quality. Southern Vermont Orchards is proud to carry on the tradition of fine fruit established by Edward Everett.

The latest generation to run the Southern Vermont Orchards, have transformed the business from the 100-year-old orchard covering the hills south of Bennington, Vermont, into a thriving bakery and produce market featured on The Food Network's $40 A Day, Good Morning America, Ron Hazelton's House Calls and local NBC, CBS and public television affiliates. The Southern Vermont Orchards - Featured in Vermont Life Magazine.

The changes have involved expanding what was once a road side produce stands selling apples into The Apple Barn & Country Bake shop where the sweet smell of freshly picked apples mingles with the warm, rich aromas of an old-fashioned country bakery. It not only offers its fresh, delicious fruits and baked goods, maple syrup and many homemade specialty products, but has become a family entertainment destination starting with the creation of Vermont's first cornfield maze, which challenges thousands of visitors each year. The latest theme puts Vermont on the map - carving a giant map of the Green Mountain State out of 225,000 stalks of corn. In addition, the Apple Barn offers free children's programming every weekend between Labor Day and Halloween. Also on the menu is pure Vermont Maple Syrup, specialty pancake mixes and homemade apple and pumpkin butters in both sugar and non-sugar varieties.
